A mock samurai sword fight at a martial arts dojo sent a Toronto man to hospital with a punctured lung.

Toronto police Staff Sgt. Paul Scudds said an ambulance was called to a building on Queen St. E., east of Woodbine Ave., around 1:45 a.m. where attendants found a man who had been accidentally stabbed while he and a friend were playing with the sword.

He was treated at St. Michael’s Hospital and is expected to recover. The other man won’t face charges for the stabbing. .

PLAYING with a sword??????? Grrrrr!!!!

Perhaps they needed one of THESE?

New T-shirts offer protection against knives
The Yomiuri Shimbun

OSAKA--A uniform manufacturer in Chuo Ward, Osaka, has developed a T-shirt intended to provide protection against knives, following an increasing number of malicious crimes that have victimized children and late-night convenience store clerks.

The Nihon Uni company used slightly thick fibers that are more than three times as strong as cotton for the T-shirt. However, the product does not look like typical protective clothing.

The strength of the T-shirt made from ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene fiber is equal to that of aramid fiber used in body armor. But the T-shirt is machine-washable because it is lightweight.

The T-shirt provides superior protection from slashing attacks, but its mesh fabric can be punctured by a sharp point.

The short-sleeved version of the T-shirt costs 19,000-52,000 yen, while the long-sleeved variety ranges from 22,000-59,000 yen. The products will go on sale in June through distributors.

FYI, current conversion rate is about 1 USD to 100 Y, so that's $190 and up fo the T-Shirt.

At a dojo, nonetheless.....
One wonders what they thought they were doing..and why were they in the dojo 'playing with a sword" at 0130 in the morning?

Man winds up in hospital after drunken sparring match
Canwest News Service
Published: Sunday, March 23, 2008

Toronto police received a 911 call just before 2 a.m. Sunday to a studio on Queen Street East. When they arrived, a man was suffering from a collapsed lung and a 43-year old male was uncooperative with police, according to Staff Sgt. David Lowe. "The two were sparring back and forth and one was accidentally stabbed in the chest," said Lowe. "Alcohol was involved." The two men, who are members of the club, were using martial arts edged weapons, according to Lowe.

Investigators said it appears as though the men didn't realize how serious the injuries were until paramedics arrived. "It wasn't until we got the one party to the hospital that they realized how serious... he could have died."

According to Lowe, the 43-year old man charged with obstructing police, was interfering with the investigation. "The obstruct police charge was laid because of the uncooperativeness when we initially responded to the call. One party that had accidentally stabbed the other party was trying to hide the fact of what had happened."

Police said the two men are members of the martial arts club and appeared to be at the studio lawfully.
