I've watched myself and fellow-students repeatedly stab ourselves and/or impale ourselves with a scabbard while coming out of the roll in SSGB #5. I have now found something that seems to help with getting the mechanics of the roll-with-scabbard, without the hazard of whacking yourself in the gut or snapping a one-of-a-kind scabbard. I'll share it, but you have to promise not to laugh:

This Christmas, save the cardboard tube that comes inside the full-size rolls of wrapping paper. They are just the right length to act as a 'mock scabbard' when tucked inside your belt. You can practice all your forms with a mok gum, and get the 'feel' of having a scabbard in the way. On the SSGB #5 roll, you can move the position of the tube/scabbard, roll, and not kill yourself if you roll incorrectly while learning. Also, the cost to replace a cardboard tube is significantly less than cost for replacing a scabbard. I have already saved enough tubes for all the yellow-belts in my class.

(What kind of tips would you expect from someone with a name like 'Ninja Mom'? Maybe later I can add some authentic Haidong recipes, or tips for getting stains out of uniforms ?? )

That's a really good idea!
I had to practice with a moggum stuck in my belt as my 'mock scabbard' on a hardwood floor. When I started using the actual scabbard it was a lot less painful.
