Yep, you heard me. Where do you guys/gals position your sheath while doing basics, forms, cutting, etc.? I've had not real formal training on the matter but have seen it put both in front of the left hip or behind the back.
Plus, if any of you sheath savvy people would like to help further, check out this thread in Ssang-su .

Dependant upon the form, the moving the sheath from the hip to the back seems to work for most. There have been many different thoughts on this dependant upon the Master Instructor's discretion. It seems to be less important in the beginning stages than the advanced.
You should seek advice from your direct master.

This thread could be interesting. Any new thoughts? Words of wisdom? Warnings?

I'm trained in Iaido as well. So my scabbard naturaly falls towards the back, because of noto.

More vertical than horizontal or the other way? I have found with the later Yedo forms and Bonguk 1 that my scabbard seems to have naturally changed position.

Oh, I understand now.
Actually, I have a little bit of a hard time getting my scabbard to stay still while doing Yedo 5. Dunno' why.

I recently picked up a mokgum scabbard from e-bogu (yes, kendogumdo has them, but they were out).
We have a few blues and reds without kagums, and it seemed to me that at least with the mokgum scabbard they would get some familiarity with the additional complication of having a scabbard.
It obviously completely eliminates the occasional 'magic scabbard', and introduces some additional factors they'll have to get used to anyways.
I know it took some getting used to when I first got my kagum because of the scabbard; it was a huge distraction at first.
Any thoughts on out there on mokgum scabbards?

It is the right length/diameter for a mokgum scabbard, it gets in the way just like a mokgum scabbard, and you don't cry nearly as much if you break one while doing the forward roll in SSGB5.
I have heard of others using the plastic tube for carrying golf clubs (a little more durable, and not much more expensive), but I haven't tried one of these personally yet.

I thought about shaping one of those golf club tubes to the right shape for a scabbard, just have not gone and got one yet to see if I can do it.

What? You mean it couldn't support your body weight as you rolled over it?

Grrrr. . . I will have to remember to levitate next time! Seriously though, I had the scabbard in its usual position while doing a form and the lower 8 inches just fell off As a side note, I decided to try the Sangsoo Gumbup 5 roll with the scabbard out of the belt and it does work that way.

Tape it. Black electric tape is my preferred choice. Very fashionable...

"try the Sangsoo Gumbup 5 roll with the scabbard out of the belt and it does work that way"
When you do that, do you quickly put it back in the belt before the sword thrust after the roll, or after (which means you're doing a one handed thrust)...?
