I guess I will jump on the band waggon
Here I am. Getting ready for the World Championship, even though I didn't go my Sahbunim did not want to leave me out. Yes I did SSGB 4 when I should have done 3 but it really doesn't matter. And it was to be all the forms for the finals

Nice work, Harrison, especially in combining several forms together. Keep practicing

I've seen a few clips of people extinguishing candles with a waist cut. However, when you look at it frame by frame, you can clearly see that they didn't actualy cut the wick. I think ten candles is a bit out of my league at the moment. I was able to extingish 9 out of the 10 candles on a candle holder that our Master purchased earlier this year. I was using my wooden sword at the time and did not cut any of the wicks. I was going for just extingishing the flames. We have footage of it somewhere and someday when I find it, I'll post it. Charles, I did find your cutting of the wick to be quite impressive. What type of sword where you using?
Well, I found the clip:

I forgot that I did get them all out (I hit one of them, though). I have watched this over and over and I really don't understand what made it work. Was it speed? Angle? The height of the stand? All of the above? Any suggestions/comments etc. would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks, Dan-Dan.......... you are one of the many things I missed about my time in Korea..... (If you are ever in New York - or near New York, please let me know - you must stop by our dojang and train with us. I would really hate to think that the next time I'll see you is in Korea 2008.)
Well, I'm glad it looked like what I knew what I was doing......because to be completely honest - I did not. That clip was taped when we first got that stand back in January of this year. We were just trying it out for fun and I seemed to have the best luck with it.
Since that time, I have not done anything with it mainly because my jingum came in at the end of that month and I've been focusing most of my time, energy, and money on bamboo cutting ever since.
Candle extinguishing on that stand was really different than what I was normally used to (candles on wood peg while kneeling). While I acknowledge the comment Charles made and somewhat agree with it, I found that doing this with any amount of success had involved something more than merely "creating a big gust of wind with the drag from the cut". Speed of the cut played at huge factor and I think angle did as well. I was just hoping that others have done something like this before and would be able to shed a little more light (no pun intended) on this.
Oh, and I'll save the costumes and theatrics ......for those who wish to do that kind of thing.

The thickness or bluntness of the mokkum (this will determine how much air is displaced), the velocity at which it traveled, its angle, not to mention the surrounding environment (humidity, drafts, etc) and the amount of exhalation of the ki-hap all can play a role.
If you have ever used a mokkum or kagum with a fuller that is meant to give feedback, some of the same factors come into play. When performing a 9:00 to 3:00 cut or vice versa, unless the blade is parallel to the floor (angle) & the correct amount of power (velocity) is generated , a proper sound is not made.
Thank you

I will also send you over some neat pictures I have of you from Korea.

Are they incriminating? If so, send copies to me, too! (This is between just you and I, Jen. )
