Thanks for posting the article and translation Charles.

One thing I noticed looking at the results for Men's Bamboo, you may have made a mistake with the samurang or 1st place name. The korean characters are different for both places. Possibly a cut/paste error? ;)

Oh, and Lee Jeong Beom is actually spelled 'Brad Bonnyman'...a common mistake.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their kind words......it has been quite the journey to get where I am now. What I accomplished only illustrates what you can do when you don't limit yourself and always push for bigger goals. A special thank you goes out to Master Ralph Estrada and Instructor John Ziti - without your guidance, patience and teachings, none of this would have been possible.

I would also like to take this opportunity (as I promised to my fellow teamates on Bus #1.....the best bus ever) to present the top ten *things we loved about our trip to Korea:

10 - Cold Bottled Water
9 - Any dish that did not have rice in it
8 - Max, the Infant Aussie
7 - The ability to connect on-line
6 - Sunshine, glorious sunshine
5- The Mobeck Video
4 - Cass Beer
3- Punctuality
2 - CRUNKY
1 - All the fellow Gumdo practioners I got to meet for the first time and and those I got to reconnect with from all over the globe. Despite having a raging head cold and being miserable - you guys shared your cold medicine, advice and good times. Thanks!

*This list was written mostly by Mr. Ray Robbins - the "Crunk-meister"

That might be an error. I've been told that fellow forumite Master Eric Jenko won that standing.

Sorry, those were the results as they were posted on the official World Haidong Gumdo Website. He is also ranked in the same category directly below. Also, I didn't find any trace of Jason Dudek in the rankings at all. Strange.

Hi... Gold went to Master Jenko...

Here´s the proof (sorry for the bad pic-quality)...

Image

Maybe Eric Wilson won the "young adults" ???

Regards,
Wolfgang

It was my understanding that each group of names under "Individual Gumbup" were the placement of the competitors for that round that didn't advance. The first place finisher in each round receiving gold, the second silver, etc.

Wolfgang's picture matches the results for the fourth round (that's Mr Goodwin's unmistakably large form on the Bronze platform).

However I could be wrong and each listing of names is for a separate gumbup compeition and not listed in order of elimination. Hard to tell without categories listed before the groups. Not your fault Charles. The Federation probably hasn't gotten around to producting a more offical or detailed listing.

Eric Wilson did indeed win the Gold in Gum Bup. He's a 13 year old from Master Parnell's school in Utah. And he darn well earned it.

I initially committed an oversight and thought Eric Wilson was a typo on Eric Jenko. Congrats to both contestants.

On another note (to stir the pot a bit), has anyone else noticed that six of the seven contestants in the photo above are instructors as indicated by their grey pants? What implications might this present, pro and con?

Congratulations to all that attended the World Championships.

Casey, I noticed that too. I think that the instructors would hold the advantages but the non instructor competitors would reap a heck of a lot of glory if they won.

A better question could also be, "Why don't the Korean masters compete?". If the quality of gumdo is so much better in Korea, and it is, then why don't they compete? Why don't members of the demonstration team compete? Is it the realisation that they could wipe the floor with us if they desired to do so, and as a result they chose to not even bother? Maybe Korea's best don't even compete anymore? I always thought that tournaments directly contredicted the most important principles of HDGD, maybe they think so too?

Eh, I think I just went off on a rant.

My opinion on the matter is that grey skirts are usualy on the podium because they have more experience.
